昨年はイギリス🇬🇧のロンドン、今年はフランス🇫🇷にアラ還女子で旅行。同じヨーロッパだから、同じものを用意していけば良いかしら、と思いきや調べてみるといろいろ違う。フランス旅行を計画している方へ、初心者ヨーロッパ旅行者である私が驚いたことをご紹介します。

Last year, I traveled to London, England 🇬🇧. This year, I visited France 🇫🇷—both trips as a woman nearing her 60s.

Since both are in Europe, I assumed I could just pack the same things as before. But after doing some research, I found there were actually quite a few differences.

For those planning a trip to France, I’d like to share some of the things that surprised me as a first-time traveler in Europe.

フランスのホテルで驚いたこと　　What surprised me at a hotel in France

湯沸かしポットがない！お湯はどうする？　There’s no kettle! How am I supposed to boil water?

↑　B&B Hotel Chartres Centre Cathedrale　は、この真ん中の機械で、水がもらえるとのことでしたが、夜はお湯はでなかったです。スタッフはとてもフレンドリーでやさしい男性が3人でした。

↑ At B&B Hotel Chartres Centre Cathedrale, I was told that I could get water from the machine in the middle, but there was no hot water at night. The staff were very friendly, and there were three kind men.

フランスの多くのホテルには、部屋に湯沸かしポットがありません。日本のビジネスホテルでは当たり前の設備ですが、フランスでは高級ホテルを除いてほとんど見かけないそうです。今回は、パリのノボテルホテルのみ、置かれていました。
Many hotels in France do not have kettles in their rooms. This is standard equipment in Japanese business hotels, but in France, it is rarely seen except in luxury hotels. This time, only the Novotel Hotel in Paris had one.

ホテルに帰ったときや朝起きた時に緑茶が飲みたい私には、お湯が手に入らず残念でした。ホテルのレストランに頼めばお湯をもらえることを知り、保温ボトルを持ってくればよかったと反省。ロンドン旅では持っていったのですが、使わなかったので今回は持参しなかったのです。保温ボトルがあれば、この問題は解決しました。

For me, who wanted to drink green tea when I returned to the hotel or woke up in the morning, it was disappointing that I couldn’t get hot water. I later found out that I could ask the hotel restaurant for hot water, and regretted not bringing a thermos bottle. I had brought one on my London trip, but didn’t use it, so I didn’t bring it this time. If I had had a thermos bottle, this problem would have been solved.

対策としておすすめ：
Recommended solutions:

• 小型のポータブル電気ケトルを持参する
• レストランやフロントにお湯をもらえるか事前に確認し、もらえるようならば保温ボトルを持参する
• ホテル予約時に「湯沸かしポットあり」を条件にする

• Bring a small portable electric kettle
• Check in advance if you can get hot water from the restaurant or front desk, and if so, bring a thermos bottle
• Make “hot water kettle available” a condition when booking the hotel

シャンプー・リンスは置いてない？石鹸だけって本当？They don’t have shampoo or conditioner? Is it true that they only have soap?

フランスのホテルでは、「ボディソープ・シャンプー・リンス」がすべて兼用の液体ソープ1本だけということも珍しくないとのこと。実際、そうでした。
容器には「Savon」や「Body & Hair Soap」と書かれているだけで、使い分けはされていないことが多いです。
In French hotels, it is not uncommon to find a single bottle of liquid soap that serves as body soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Indeed, this was the case.

The containers are often labeled simply “Savon” or “Body & Hair Soap,” with no distinction between their uses.

髪や肌のコンディションにこだわる人は、以下の持参がおすすめです。

• トラベル用のシャンプー・リンスセット
• 敏感肌用の自分に合った洗顔料やボディソープ
• 使い捨てタイプの個包装アメニティ（コンビニや無印で買える）

For those who are particular about the condition of their hair and skin, we recommend bringing the following items.

• Travel-size shampoo and conditioner set
• Facial cleanser and body soap suitable for sensitive skin
• Individually packaged disposable amenities (available at convenience stores and Muji)

スリッパや歯ブラシは基本持参。アメニティの常識が違うBring your own slippers and toothbrush. Amenities are different from what you are used to.

フランスのホテルでは、スリッパや歯ブラシが置いていないのが当たり前です。
現地の人々は室内でも靴を履いたまま過ごす文化があり、部屋用スリッパを提供しないホテルがほとんどです。
In French hotels, it is common for slippers and toothbrushes not to be provided.

The local culture is to wear shoes indoors, so most hotels do not provide slippers for guest rooms.

また、歯ブラシ・歯磨き粉、コップも紙コップで人数分。洗面台はとってもシンプル。

「使い捨てアメニティを無料で配るのは環境に良くない」という考え方も浸透しているんですね。日本とは違うと考えて、準備すると快適に過ごせます。

In addition, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and cups are provided in paper cups for each guest. The sink is very simple.

The idea that “providing free disposable amenities is not good for the environment” is becoming more widespread. If you prepare yourself with the understanding that this is different from Japan, you will be able to enjoy a comfortable stay.

タオルの枚数・ドライヤーの有無など、設備の確認ポイント　Checkpoints for facilities, such as the number of towels and availability of hair dryers

今回の宿泊先で最もシンプルな設備のシャルトル　 B&B Hotel Chartres Centre Cathedrale　のfドライヤー。
The hairdryer at B&B Hotel Chartres Centre Cathedrale, which had the simplest facilities of all the accommodations we stayed at this time.

今回の宿泊先で、最も豪華な設備のモン・サン・ミッシェル　Le Relais Saint-Michel　のドライヤー。性能は同じでした。

The hairdryer at Le Relais Saint-Michel, the most luxurious accommodation on this trip, had the same performance.

タオルの枚数は「大1枚、小1枚」が標準で、連泊しても、明確に使用済みを示さないと（例えば、バスタブに入れておくなど）交換されないことあるそうです。

モン・サン・ミッシェルのホテルでは、小タオルがバスマットと同じく厚手のゴワゴワしたものでした。「バスマットが２枚きているのでは？」と心配しましたが、他の部屋の方も同じだったので、そういうものなのだと思い至りました。日本のタオルとは肌触りが違うのでした。柔らかいタオルで顔を拭きたいと思われる方は、好みのタオルを持参されると良いと思います。
また、ドライヤーは壁に固定されているタイプでした。（↑）これは、シャルトルからパリまでぜんぶ同じタイプでした。プラスチック部分を持ち上げると風が出てきて、もとに戻すと張り付くように止まるタイプでした。

予約サイトでホテルの詳細をよく確認し、気になる場合は事前にメールで質問しておきましょう。

The standard number of towels is one large and one small, and even if you stay for multiple nights, they may not be replaced unless you clearly indicate that they have been used (for example, by leaving them in the bathtub).

At the hotel in Mont Saint-Michel, the small towels were thick and rough, similar to the bath mats. I was worried that there might be two bath mats, but since other rooms had the same setup, I realized that was just how it was. The texture of the towels was different from Japanese towels. If you prefer softer towels for your face, I recommend bringing your own.

Additionally, the hairdryer was a wall-mounted type. (↑) This was the same type throughout the journey from Chartres to Paris. When you lift the plastic part, air comes out, and when you release it, it stays in place.

Be sure to check the hotel details thoroughly on the booking site, and if you have any concerns, ask in advance via email.

ロンドンの違いも実感！表示の言語・水事情　Experience the differences in London! Display languages and water conditions

表示　基本的にはフランス語での表示。英語併記がない　Display: Displayed mainly in French. No English translation provided.

ロンドンが英語表示なのは当然ですが、基本、フランスは英語併記がありませんでした。ホテルでは、こちらが英語で話し始めれば、英語で対応してくれました。支払いの際は、”Apple Pay”という発音が悪かったからか、理解されないことも。若い人を呼んできて、その若い方に「OK」と答えてもらったこともありました。

It goes without saying that London uses English signage, but France generally did not have English translations. At hotels, when we started speaking in English, they responded in English. When paying, perhaps because my pronunciation of “Apple Pay” was poor, they sometimes did not understand me. They called a young person over, and that young person answered “OK.”

水事情　日本は軟水、フランスは硬水　Water conditions: Japan has soft water, France has hard water.

フランスのホテルでは、水道水がそのまま飲めるとされています。
ホテルの案内にも「水道水を飲んでください」「ロビーの給水器をご利用ください」と書かれていて、現地の人もその水を普通に使っているようでした。

私も、出発前に「水には困らない」と聞いていたので、日本でよく飲んでいたevianのペットボトル（硬水）をフランス現地でも購入して飲んでいました。

ところが…旅行2日目あたりから、なんとなくお腹の調子が悪くなってしまいました。

In French hotels, tap water is considered safe to drink.

The hotel information stated, “Please drink the tap water” and “Please use the water dispenser in the lobby,” and the locals seemed to be using the water normally.

Before leaving, I had been told that I would have no trouble finding water, so I bought Evian bottled water (hard water), which I often drink in Japan, and drank it in France.

However… around the second day of the trip, I started to feel a bit off.

体に合わないのは「硬水」だった？　Was it “hard water” that didn’t suit my body?

一緒に旅行していた友人は、

• 水道水は一切飲まない
• 最低でもペットボトルの水
• できれば日本から持ってきた水を飲む
  という徹底ぶり。

私は気にしていなかったのですが、どうやら硬水が体に合わなかったようで、体調に差が出ました。

My friend, who was traveling with me,

never drank tap water.

She drank bottled water at the very least,

and preferably water she had brought from Japan.

She was very strict about this.

I didn’t think much of it, but it seems that the hard water didn’t agree with me and it affected my health.

「Volvic（軟水）」に変えてみたら… I switched to Volvic (soft water)…

硬水のevianから、軟水のVolvicに切り替えてみると、お腹の調子が次第に回復。
私のように普段、軟水に慣れている方は、海外での水選びに注意が必要だと実感しました。

When I switched from hard water Evian to soft water Volvic, my stomach gradually recovered.

People like me who are used to soft water need to be careful when choosing water overseas.

旅行後半は、さらに工夫して

• ホテルの給水器の水
• 部屋に用意されていたペットボトルの水（硬水）
  を、持参した浄水器付きボトルに入れて飲むようにしました。

そのおかげで体調は回復し、安心して観光を楽しめました。

For the latter half of the trip, I made further improvements.

I filled the water dispenser at the hotel

and the bottled water (hard water) provided in the room

into a water purifier bottle I had brought with me and drank that.

This method made the taste milder and closer to soft water.

Thanks to that, my physical condition recovered, and I was able to enjoy sightseeing with peace of mind.

フランス旅行では水選びに注意 Be careful when choosing water during your trip to France

日本とは違い、フランスでは硬水が一般的。部屋で沸かしてのも覆うにも、湯沸かしポットがありません。
ホテルにある水も基本的には硬水なので、体質によっては注意が必要です。

私のように「硬水でお腹の調子が悪くなる」こともあるので、以下のような対策をおすすめします。

✔️ 日本から浄水器付きボトルを持参する
✔️ 現地では**Volvic（軟水）**を選ぶ
✔️ 水道水や無料の給水器の水は、直接飲まない方が安心

ちょっとした備えで、旅先でも安心して水分補給ができますよ！

Unlike Japan, hard water is common in France. There are no kettles in the rooms for boiling water.

The water in hotels is also basically hard water, so you need to be careful depending on your constitution.

Some people, like me, may experience stomach problems from drinking hard water, so I recommend the following measures.

大聖堂から徒歩圏内にある便利な立地のホテル。シンプルながら清潔感があり、観光にぴったりの宿。フロント対応もスムーズでした。

A conveniently located hotel within walking distance of the cathedral. Simple yet clean, it is the perfect place to stay for sightseeing. The front desk staff were also very helpful.

◾️ モン・サン・ミッシェル：Le Relais Saint-Michel

モン・サン・ミッシェルを真正面に望める絶景ホテル！部屋のバルコニーからの眺めは圧巻で、写真好きにはたまらないロケーションです。レストランからの景色も◎。

A hotel with a spectacular view of Mont Saint-Michel right in front of you! The view from the balcony of the room is breathtaking, and the location is irresistible for photography enthusiasts. The view from the restaurant is also excellent.

◾️ トゥール：Ibis Styles Tours Centre

トゥール駅からはやや離れていますが、トラム利用でアクセス可能。ポップな内装と朝食付きがうれしい中堅ホテル。観光の拠点にもおすすめ。

It is a bit far from Tours Station, but accessible by tram. This mid-range hotel has a fun interior and includes breakfast, making it a great base for sightseeing.

◾️ パリ：Novotel Paris Centre Tour Eiffel

セーヌ川沿いにあり、エッフェル塔までも徒歩圏内。設備は新しく、ファミリーやビジネス利用にも対応。やや大規模なホテルですが、安心感があります。

Located along the Seine River, it is within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower. The facilities are new and suitable for families and business travelers. Although it is a large hotel, it has a comfortable atmosphere.
