2024年6月にKew Gardensを訪れました。ずっと憧れていたKew Gardensに行くために、ロンドン旅行を計画しました。しかし、『地球の歩き方』以外のガイドブックには詳しい情報がなく、どうやって行けばいいのか分かりませんでした。同じようにKew Gardensに行きたい方のために、ラッセル・スクエア駅からKew Gardensへの地下鉄での行き方をご紹介します。また、9月29日まで開催されている展覧会についてもお知らせします。
I visited Kew Gardens in June 2024. I had long dreamed of visiting Kew Gardens, so I planned a trip to London. However, apart from “Chikyuu no Arukikata” (the Japanese guidebook), I couldn’t find detailed information in other guidebooks, and I wasn’t sure how to get there. For those who also wish to visit Kew Gardens, I will share directions on how to get there by subway from Russell Square Station. Additionally, I will provide information on the exhibition that runs until September 29.

ラッセル・スクエア駅から地下鉄ピカデリーラインに乗り、ハマースミス駅でディストリクトラインに乗り換えます。ハマースミス駅での乗り換え時には、同じホームに2つの異なる行き先の電車が来るため、注意が必要です。Kew Gardensに行きたい場合は、リッチモンド行きの電車に乗ってください。Kew Gardens駅はゾーン3にあり、ディストリクト線（リッチモンド支線）とロンドン・オーバーグラウンドが通っています。
ラッセル・スクエア駅からピカデリーラインに乗ると、12駅・約22分でハマースミス駅に到着します。ハマースミス駅でリッチモンド行きの電車を待ち、私たちが乗った電車は5駅目でKew Gardens駅に到着しました。
階段を下りて反対側に行くと、出口があります。改札を出たところが出口です。↓
From Russell Square Station, take the Piccadilly Line and transfer to the District Line at Hammersmith Station. When transferring at Hammersmith, be aware that there are two different train destinations on the same platform. If you’re heading to Kew Gardens, be sure to board the train bound for Richmond. Kew Gardens Station is in Zone 3 and is served by the District Line (Richmond branch) and the London Overground.
After boarding the Piccadilly Line at Russell Square, you’ll arrive at Hammersmith Station after 12 stops, which takes about 22 minutes. At Hammersmith, wait for the train heading to Richmond. The train we took arrived at Kew Gardens Station after 5 stops.
Once you descend the stairs and head to the opposite side, you’ll find the exit. The exit is located just after you pass through the ticket barriers.

Kew Gardens駅から徒歩で向かうと、最初に突き当たるのがビクトリアゲートです。このゲートから入場します。
ビクトリアゲートからそのまま入場し、まずチケットを購入します。チケットにはいくつか種類があり、私は寄付金付きの入場券（22ポンド）を購入しました。入場してすぐ右手には、ビクトリアゲート＆カフェがあります。中に入ると、お店があり、その奥にカフェが見えました。ここでお昼を食べることに決めました！
さらにその先にはトイレがあります。トイレの内装がとても美しかったので、思わず写真を撮ってしまいました。（失礼しました！）↓
When you walk from Kew Gardens Station, you’ll arrive at Victoria Gate, which is the entrance.
Upon entering through Victoria Gate, the first thing to do is purchase a ticket. There are several types of tickets, and I opted for one that included a donation, which cost £22. Just to the right after entering, you’ll find the Victoria Gate & Café. Inside, there’s a shop, and further back, you can see the café. I decided to have lunch there!
A little further ahead, there are restrooms. The color scheme inside was so beautiful that I couldn’t resist taking a photo. (Apologies!)
そこからゆっくり池の周りを通って、パームハウスに向かいます。パームハウスの向かいには、素敵なレストラン「The Botanical Brasserie（ボタニカル・ブラセリー）」があります。こちらは、そのレストランの前から撮ったパームハウスの写真です。↓

幸運なことに、私が訪れた際、Kew Gardensでは「ライト・イントゥ・ライフ Light into Life」展が開催されていました。この展覧会は2024年5月4日に開幕し、9月29日まで続きます。アーティストのマーク・クイーンMarc Quinnは、Kew Gardensの科学研究にインスピレーションを受け、このコレクションのために5つの彫刻作品を制作した芸術家です。これらの彫刻は風景のさまざまな場所に点在しており、多くがステンレススチールで作られています。光沢のある表面には、Kew Gardensの豊かな緑が映り込みます。全16作品が展示されており、一部は芝生の上に、他の作品は有名な温室内の植物の間に配置されています。特に、パームハウス近くで見た作品は非常に美しいものでした。

I was fortunate to visit Kew Gardens during the “Light into Life” exhibition. This exhibition opened on May 4 and will run until September 29. The artist Marc Quinn was inspired by the scientific research conducted at Kew Gardens to create five sculptures for this collection. These sculptures are scattered across the landscape, with many made of stainless steel. The shiny surfaces reflect the rich greenery of Kew Gardens. A total of 16 works are on display, with some placed on the lawns and others nestled among the plants inside the famous greenhouses. Among them, the piece titled “Singularity(Sabal)2024” which I saw near the Palm House, was particularly beautiful.

ランチはどうするのか。パンなどを買って行き、外で食べるのも良いですが、私はVictoria Plaza & Café（一番下にかかれています）で飲み物とラップサンドイッチを買いました。Flat White £3.55、 ラップサンドイッチ £5.55でした。美味しかったです。↓
What to do for lunch? You can buy some bread and eat outside, but I chose to buy a drink and a wrap sandwich at Victoria Plaza & Café (listed at the bottom of the pamphlet). The Flat White was £3.55, and the wrap sandwich was £5.55. Both were delicious.

帰りの電車にも気をつけてくださいね。私はうっかり１駅乗り越してしまいました。帰りはホッとしていて、ホームに滑り込んできた電車に急いで乗り込んだんです。そして、次の駅で降りて地下鉄に乗り換えなければいけなかったのに、ぼーっとしていてその駅を過ぎてしまいました。電車が速度を上げて走る様子を見て、何だかおかしいなと思い、鉄道の地図を調べたら、乗り越してしまったことに気づきました。急いで次の停車駅で降り、駅の窓口で乗り越したことを伝えて、ロンドン市内への帰り方を教えてもらいました。私が乗ったのは、下の地図で示されているオレンジ色のロンドン地上線です。もし緑色のディストリクト線に乗っていれば、行きと同じルートで帰れたんですが、気づきませんでしたね。地上線を利用する場合は、次の駅Gunnersburyで乗り換える必要があります。大失敗でした！皆様もお気をつけください。↓
Please be careful on your return train as well. I ended up missing my stop by one station. On the way back, I was relaxed and quickly boarded the train that slid into the platform. However, I was supposed to get off at the next station and transfer to the subway, but I absentmindedly passed that station. As the train picked up speed, I felt something was off and checked the railway map, realizing I had missed my stop. I quickly got off at the next station and explained my situation at the ticket office, where they guided me on how to get back to central London. We had boarded the London Overground, marked in orange on the map below. If we had taken the green District line, we could have followed the same route as on the way there, but I didn’t notice. If you’re on the Overground, you need to transfer at the next station, Gunnersbury. It was a big mistake! Please be careful, everyone.
船でKew Gardens 行くのもおすすめ
Kew Gardens には、ウエストミンスター・ミレニアム・ピアから、キュー・ピアまで船に乗ることもできます。４月上旬から９月の運航で、１時間30分かかるそうです。イギリス在住の方には、時間に余裕があればこちもおすすめとのことでしたので、次に行くときには船も良いかなと思っています。
You can also take a boat from Westminster Millennium Pier to Kew Pier, which runs from early April to September and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. I was told by a resident of the UK that this is also a good option if you have time to spare, so I am thinking of taking a boat next time I visit.
