JR Tokai, JR West, and JR Kyushu have announced that smoking rooms in their trains will be completely eliminated in the spring of 2024.
On October 17, 2023, JR Tokai, JR West, and JR Kyushu announced that smoking rooms currently provided in the Tokaido Shinkansen, Sanyo Shinkansen, and Kyushu Shinkansen trains will be completely abolished in the spring of 2024. The Tohoku Shinkansen, Joetsu Shinkansen, Akita Shinkansen, and Yamagata Shinkansen have already eliminated smoking seats and smoking rooms since 2007. Therefore, from the spring of 2024, smoking will be completely prohibited on all Shinkansen lines in Japan.
As of October 2023, smoking rooms have been installed in three locations on the Tokaido Shinkansen, three locations on the Sanyo Shinkansen for 16-car trains, and two locations for 8-car trains. All of these will be discontinued.
Sanyo Shinkansen also eliminated smoking corners at stations
In addition, on the Sanyo Shinkansen, non-smoking areas at Shin-Kurashiki, Shin-Omichi, Mihara, Higashi-Hiroshima, Shin-Iwakuni, Tokuyama, Asa, and Shin-Shimonoseki stations will be discontinued.
This response is based on the growing health consciousness and the declining smoking rate. After the smoking rooms are eliminated, the company plans to place emergency drinking water and other items in the rooms in preparation for disasters, a move that is also a preparation for disasters.
Have a good time ! (^^)/
